Zelenskyy Lauds U.S. Move to Disrupt Russia’s Energy Revenue Amid Ongoing Conflict

Zelenskyy, Ukranian President

In a bold move aimed at further crippling Russia’s war efforts, the United States has unveiled a new set of sanctions targeting over 400 entities linked to Russia’s energy industry. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly endorsed the action, calling it a crucial step in undermining Russia’s financial and logistical networks that sustain its ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

The new sanctions, announced on Friday, focus on critical aspects of Russia’s energy sector. The measures target major producers, insurance firms, service providers, logistics facilities, and even a fleet of 184 “shadow tankers” used to bypass existing sanctions. This wide-ranging crackdown will severely disrupt Russia’s ability to generate revenue from its oil and gas exports.

“I am deeply grateful to @POTUS, his administration, and the entire American people for today’s announcement of this significant sanctions package,” Zelenskyy wrote in a post on X. “These measures strike a direct blow to Russia’s financial foundation, targeting everything from key producers to the shadow fleet tankers.”

One of the key entities hit by the sanctions is Surgutneftegaz, a major Russian oil company that Zelenskyy has linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s financial support system. The sanctions are expected to reduce Russia’s oil revenue, which Zelenskyy believes could accelerate the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

“The United States has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to global security,” Zelenskyy stated, stressing that these sanctions disrupt Russia’s entire supply chain within the energy sector. “Energy resources should never be used as weapons, as Russia does.”

The Ukrainian president also emphasized the importance of energy resources being used responsibly, as tools for stability, rather than instruments of conflict. He expressed confidence that these sanctions would have a meaningful impact on Russia’s ability to continue its military aggression.

Zelenskyy also praised the bipartisan support for the sanctions in the U.S., describing it as a crucial element in the fight against Russian aggression. “I am confident these steps will significantly reduce Russia’s petrodollar income and, with it, its ability to continue its aggression,” he added.
