“You’ve NOT defeated Boko Haram,” Ezekwesili tells Buhari
As far as former education minister Obiageli Ezekwesili is concerned, President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim to have “technically” defeated Boko Haram holds no water.
The Nigerian military is taking out Boko Haram terrorists by the dozens but can’t claim victory yet.
Ezekwesili reminded Buhari he shouldn’t claim victory over the terrorists until the schoolgirls they kidnapped from Borno State in 2014 are rescued alive.
After Buhari’s predecessor Goodluck Jonathan failed to rescue the schoolgirls, Nigerians used their voting power to kick him out of office.
Buhari took the oath of office in May, 2015, promising to rescue the girls.
Here are his words:
We can not claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents.
He’s yet to fulfil the promise.
Buhari had set a December deadline for the military to crush Boko Haram. It is not clear if the same deadline applies to rescuing the schoolgirls
Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed said the military has met that deadline but warned Boko Haram attacks on “soft targets” may continue.
Boko Haram leader Abubabakar Shekau reportedly released an audio calling Buhari a liar over claims the sect had been handicapped.
All the while, the schoolgirls Boko Haram kidnapped in April 2014 are spending their second Christmas season in terrorist captivity.
They are far flung from their devastated parents, 19 of whom have succumbed to traumatic deaths.
Ezekwesili spearheads the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) Group which insists the schoolgirls must be rescued alive and reintegrated into the society..
