Yari maintains declaration of State of Emergency solution to Zamfara crisis

Zamfara governor Abdulaziz Yari is prepared to throw in the towel over the security crisis in his state.

Armed bandits have reportedly gone on rampage since weeks ago, killing locals in various communities.

Yari said on Thursday that he wouldn’t mind stepping down as the state’s number one citizen if the declaration of state of emergency would ensure peace returns.

The governor had earlier urged President Buhari to give the order as the killings worsened.

“I’m not playing politics with it (declaration of state of emergency). I’m serious about it,” Yari said after a meeting with Buhari at the Villa.

He, however, downplayed the reports that the bandits currently occupy territories and maintained that the killings would have no adverse effect on the forthcoming elections.

“There is no place being occupied by the armed bandits in Zamfara state. They live and operate in the forest. They strike and run. Most of the camps are known by locals,” he said, adding that provision of adequate security operatives could easily ensure an end to the crisis.

The governor said he had talks with Buhari over the security concerns, and said he was waiting for the policemen redeployed from the state to be replaced.
