World Leaders mourn former President Buhari
World leaders have paid glowing tributes to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness.
Described as a man of discipline, integrity, and pan-African vision, Buhari’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from within and outside Africa.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, called him “a principled and resolute leader who served Nigeria with honour and conviction,” and “a steadfast supporter of multilateral cooperation and a tireless champion of peace and stability across Africa.”
President Bola Tinubu described Buhari as “a disciplined patriot whose unwavering belief in Nigeria’s unity guided his every action.” Tinubu has ordered flags to fly at half-mast for seven days.
Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, posted: “This is truly a devastating loss, and our thoughts are with you all.”
Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, reacted with shock: “I did not know just how ill President Buhari was… I am so very sad. May the Soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace.”
The US embassy in Nigeria said, “His legacy includes his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss.”
The Chinese embassy added, “His pivotal contributions to advancing China-Nigeria relations will forever remain etched in our shared history.”
ECOWAS President Omar Touray hailed Buhari as “a distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration.”
Turkey’s embassy expressed “deep sadness,” stating, “May the Almighty Allah bless his soul.”
