Women, children, policeman die in fresh Shi’ites/Police clash in Kano

A fresh clash between policemen and some protesting Shi’ites in Kano has left as many as nine persons, including women, children and a policeman, dead.

The clash happened on Monday, November 14 after Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) members took to the streets to demand the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, NAN reports.

Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf, the Commissioner of Police in the state, disclosed in a press briefing in Kano that eight members of the sect were killed while his men lost a member during the clash which occurred along Kano-Zaria road in the city.

“During the clash, we were able to arrest many members of the IMN and we are going to conduct an investigation into the incident. Members of the movement snatched an AK 47 riffle from our men, but we were able to recover it,” he said.

A spokesperson for the sect in Kano, Malam Ali Kakaki however explained that “our members walked toward the Amana City close to Tamburawa Area, some policemen began to shoot in all directions. The casualties on our side involved women and children.”

Yusuf urged the general public to go about their daily activities with no worry as normalcy has been returned to the city.
