Woman tells court she doesn’t understand English, as EFCC arraigns 4 for stealing N1.3bn police money

A woman facing fraud charges told the court on Thursday that she lacked English comprehension, forcing the case to be adjourned.

The EFCC has dragged Helen Nwafor, along with three others – Ifeoma Okpalugo, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Olumide Odumosu, and Sule Yusuf Tegina – to court for allegedly diverting N1.3 billion belonging to the Nigeria Police Force for personal use.

Two other suspects, Ogbadu Joseph and Hassan Paiko Muhammed, were said to be at large.

The suspects have been charged with a 14-count charge bordering on felony and stealing.

They allegedly diverted the sum, sometime in 2013, through Yus Investment Nigeria Limited and Olivia Osmond Nigeria Limited.

When the matter was called at the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, Nwafor told the court that she would need someone to interprete the charges preferred against her in her native language, Igbo, as she did not understand English.

Justice Sherifat Solebo was forced to adjourn the case till Wednesday, November 7.
