“Why Will I Contest Against Someone I’m Working For?” – Wike Shuts Down 2027 Rumours
Nyesom Wike, former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed speculations about a potential presidential bid in 2027, stating unequivocally that he has no plans to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general elections.
Wike’s clarification follows recent comments urging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its presidential ticket to the South, a position that fueled widespread assumptions about his political intentions. However, during an interview with BBC Pidgin, which was published over the weekend, Wike insisted that his loyalty to President Tinubu remains firm and that he has no desire to contest.
“I will not contest. Why will I contest against someone I’m working for?” Wike said during the interview.
He further argued that no political figure currently poses a real challenge to Tinubu’s re-election bid. “I will not contest again. I cannot contest against someone I am working with. Who will win except him?” he added.
Regarding the PDP’s ongoing deliberations on zoning its presidential ticket, Wike took a neutral tone, suggesting the matter remains unresolved.
“They said they would zone it to the South, let them zone first. When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it,” he remarked.
Wike also addressed the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, where tensions between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara have sparked headlines. Dismissing claims of a personal feud, Wike said, “That one is not a battle. He (Fubara) is my boy, he is my son, why will I fight with him? I’m only fighting against people who want to steal what they did not work for.”
“Now, they are ashamed because they are being defeated. They are the ones pushing Fubara,” he concluded.
