Why We Used Leg Cuffs on Dismissed Officer Makinde – Nigerian Police
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has explained why it used leg cuffs on dismissed officer Vincent Makinde.
According to them, Makinde had previously escaped from lawful custody.
This was revealed in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday.
Recall that Makinde was dismissed as a Police Inspector from the Force.
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has labeled the treatment of Makinde as savage.
The Force insists that the detention of Makinde, arrested in 2022, was “lawful.”
This is despite a viral video showing Makinde in leg cuffs.

The Force stated that the use of these restraints is “global practice” and sees no wrongdoing.
NPF revealed that Makinde needed to be closely monitored as they allege he once assaulted a senior officer and escaped custody.
His reappearance in June 2024, while parading himself as an active police officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, prompted his re-arrest by the Force.
“The use of restraining devices is a global practice for individuals actively resisting lawful detention or posing a threat,” the statement read.
A police investigation in 2022 found Makinde guilty of abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, dereliction of duty, insubordination, and many other offenses.
Makinde is now expected to stand trial for the aforementioned crimes and other criminal activities the Police have accused him of.
