Why Appeal Court Sacked Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State

Two months after the Tribunal nullified the declaration of Governor Abba Yusuf as the duly elected governor of Kano State and declared the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, as the winner of the governorship election in the state, the Appeal Court on Friday, November 17, 2023, has upheld the judgment of the lower court.

Yusuf, who contested on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), formed by ex-governor of the state, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the governorship poll in March 2023.

However, in a three-man judgment on September 20, 2023, the tribunal nullified the declaration and declared Gawuna as the winner of the election.

Similarly, the Appeal Court affirmed the decision of the lower court and ruled that Abba Yusuf was not qualified to contest the said election.
