What has Patricia Etteh been up to since she left the House of Representatives?
Patricia Etteh was Nigeria’s first female Speaker of the House of Representatives when she was elected unopposed on June 6, 2007. At that time, she was a member of the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party in her third term as a member of the House of Representatives after being elected in 1999 as a member of the Alliance for Democracy and in 2003 when she switched to the PDP.
Etteh represented Ayedaade/Isokan/Irewole Federal constituency from 1999 to 2011. A few months after she was elected as Speaker in June 2007, she was accused of awarding a ₦628 million contract for the upgrade of her official residence and that of her deputy, Babangida Nguroje.
Following intense pressure from other lawmakers, she stepped down from the position on October 30, 2007, and maintained a low profile in the House after that.
A year after leaving the House of Representatives, she enrolled at the University of Buckingham in 2012 to study law and graduated in December 2014.
In February 2015, Patricia Etteh announced that she was joining the All Progressives Congress. She then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in 2016 before being called to Bar later in the year.
In 2018, she was appointed to head the National Hospital in Abuja as a member of the Governing Boards and Councils.
She has kept a relatively low profile, although she was listed as part of the APC campaign council for the Anambra governorship election a month ago.
