WATCH: Religious leaders should stay away from partisan politics – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari, during an Interfaith Conference on Religious Harmony in Nigeria, at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Saturday, said religious leaders should not be involved in partisan politics.
In attendance at the conference were some religious and traditional leaders.
“Having witnessed the roles our religious leaders have been playing so far, I appeal to them to eschew partisan politics and appeal to their respective members to read the manifestos of each political party, discuss and pray for God’s guidance before casting their votes,” he said.
A prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and Winners Chapel General Overseer, Bishop Oyedepo had raised eyebrows last week when they were seen with presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar at Obasanjo’s residence in Ota.
Buhari had, on Independence Day, received Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, who urged the president to “remain focused and courageous and do what is right” as “not everyone will support [him] publicly”.
“But we are praying for you so that your tenure will be one of progress and prosperity for the country,” Kumuyi had said.
