Voting Commences In Bayelsa and Kogi Governorship Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has today, November 16, 2019, commenced voting for the governorship elections in both Bayelsa and Kogi states.
These two states whose election cycles fall outside the general elections are conducting a by-election to choose new governors.
In Bayelsa, Diri Duoye (PDP), is vying to replace the outgoing PDP governor, Seriake Dickson. He’s rivalled by APC’s David Lyon who was reinstated by the Appeal Court after hes was disqualified earlier by the Bayelsa High Court. These two will be contending for the same position with many other candidates.
In Kogi, the incumbent governor, Yahaya Bello (APC), is on the ballot to secure a second term in office. He is contesting against more than 20 other candidates, including his closest opposition, Musa Wada of PDP and the outspoken SDP candidate, Natasha Akpoti.
The election in Kogi will also include a rerun of the Kogi West senatorial position between Dino Melaye and Smart Adeyemi. The position became vacant after the Court of Appeal sacked Dino Melaye last month, and ordered a fresh election to correct the irregularities that led to Dino Melaye’s victory in the general elections.
