US Proposes $8 Billion Arms Sale to Israel Amid Ongoing Middle East Crisis

Biden's DNC Keynote Address Slams Trump, Heaps Praise on Kamala Harris

In a bold move signaling continued support for Israel, the Biden administration has informed Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale. This proposed deal comes at a time of heightened tension in the region, particularly between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant group backed by Iran.

The United States’(US) notification to Congress outlines a deal that includes munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters, artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, and warheads, according to reports from Reuters and Axios. To move forward, the deal would need approval from both the House of Representatives and Senate committees.

This arms sale proposal occurs amidst a 15-month-long war in Gaza that began after a deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. That assault killed at least 1,200 Israelis and resulted in approximately 250 hostages being taken. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far failed, and the situation has escalated into a devastating humanitarian crisis.

The ongoing conflict has led to the displacement of Gaza’s entire 2.3 million population, with over 45,000 lives lost, and many others feared trapped under rubble. Accusations of genocide have surfaced against Israel, with the country facing global protests demanding an arms embargo. However, these protests have not swayed the Biden administration’s position.

This proposed arms deal is not the first of its kind. In August 2023, the U.S. approved a massive $20 billion sale of fighter jets and military equipment to Israel. The Biden administration justifies these moves as essential to helping its ally defend against threats from Iran-backed militant groups, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.

Despite the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza, with widespread hunger and destruction, Washington has continued to veto U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire, further solidifying its unwavering support for Israel in the face of international criticism.
