University of Maiduguri attack: 12-year-old suicide bombing suspect gunned down (Photos)
A third suicide bombing suspect in the attack that rocked University of Maiduguri early Monday morning was reportedly gunned down before she could detonate her explosives.
The suspect has been identified as a 12-year-old girl.
She was set to strike after five persons, including a professor, were killed by the blasts carried out by other suspects.
Victor Isuku, the spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force in Maiduguri, said the suspect was intercepted behind the institution.
“At about 08:000hrs, a third suicide bomber, female, of about 12 years with IED strapped to her body, was intercepted at Bara Karaya village behind University of Maiduguri, in Muna Garage general area,” Isuku said.
“The suicide bomber was sighted by villagers who promptly alerted the military. She was gunned down, while the EOD personnel of the command secured and rendered safe her unexploded IED vest.”
A 7-year-old-boy was said to have carried out one of the deadly attacks on Monday.
The attack has been blamed on Boko Haram, a sect the Nigerian government said it had “totally” crushed.
