UNIPORT SUG protests as Police admit killing student

There are widespread reports of police extortion in Nigeria.

The police in Rivers State has admitted to killing a final year student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Oghenekevvwe Edah.

And the UNIPORT Student Union Government is not taking it lightly.

A police van, reportedly driving against traffic, Sunday, hit Oghenekevwe who was standing at the Assemblies of God Church Junction, Alakahia, Port Harcourt.

Reports have it that passersby forced the police, who attempted to escape, to take him to the UNIPORT Teaching Hospital where he later died.

The police initially denied killing the victim claiming they picked him from the road after he was knocked down by a vehicle.

But they have since contacted the victim’s family with a promise to get justice for them, Emmanuel Edah, the victim’s younger brother said.

The students are not going to take it lightly according to the SUG President of UNIPORT, David Dariereka.

“We have asked our lawyer to take the matter up and soon, we will be having a protest to show that we will no longer condone this kind of thing. On January 1, we also lost a student on that road. We are going to use this to remind the authorities that human life is very precious and we can no longer be killed like fowls.”

Police declined commenting on the case until investigations are concluded..
