UNILAG: Students sign online petition against “oppressive” management

Ahead of tomorrow’s protest against the alleged injustice going on at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), intending demonstrators are already making their voices heard online.

Protesters demand reinstatement of UNILAG students who were suspended for criticising the way the school handled a protest in April 2016 in which undergraduates asked for improvement in supply of electricity and water.

UNILAG Senate suspended 11 students. One of them, Femi Adeyeye, was rusticated for four semesters over an article in which he called the management “ignorant”.

The school also banned the student union, ULSU, for leading the demonstrations.

Students, this morning, began signing an online petition against the school.

“University of Lagos unjustly suspended ULSU – UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS UNION and RUSTICATED 11 student leaders for protesting against bad welfare and insensitive school management,” the petition reads.

“Among the bad welfare elements in the school are poor health facilities, hiked prices and monopolised UNILAG ventures, epileptic power supply, undrinkable yet scares water, inhumane treatment of students, non-involvement of students in the policy making of the school among others.

UNILAG authorities, on Friday urged students not to join the planned protest as “it could degenerate into violence”. The school also called intending demonstrators “trouble-makers”.

Save UNILAG Coalition (SUC) said it planned to demonstrate peacefully, accusing UNILAG management of planning to plant trouble-makers among protesters.

SUC insists the March 6 protest will not be derailed like police allegedly did 2face Idibia’s February 6 demonstration against the Nigerian government.

  • Its barbaric for the school management to expelled the Union leaders that are fighting for emancipation… Cos that was the reason they were elected by their students… Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere…
