UNILAG students arrested after man attempted burying charms at off-campus hostel
An unknown number of alleged University of Lagos (UNILAG) students have been arrested after a man attempted burying charms at a private hostel where they live.
The facility, identified as Medas Hostel, is located off-campus at 4, Odukoya Street, Pako, Akoka-Bariga, Lagos. It is not operated by UNILAG management.
A man was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday while digging a hole in the premises.
He was caught with a bowl containing palm oil and unpeeled plantains, a white cloth, as well as other supposedly fetish items. Residents who nabbed him said those items were charms.
“He attempted burying charms at back of the building,” a resident who doesn’t want to be named told our correspondent.
“The police came and arrested all the students in the hostel, and warned neighbours not to give information to anyone concerning the incident,” he said.
The building was empty when our correspondent visited the place on Tuesday.
We gathered the arrested students have been released on bail.
A UNILAG student circulated WhatsApp messages on Tuesday warning colleagues to stay off Medas Hostel.
“The landlord sent someone to bury some stuffs in the hostel but the person was caught,” the student said.
Another witness who craved anonymity told our correspondent the man actually confessed he was sent by the landlord.
UNILAG authorities are yet to react to the story.
Accommodation is a big headache in UNILAG with the school’s facilities not big enough to contain its teeming students.
Many, for this reason, look for apartments around the school, hence private hostels. These off-campus hostels are operated by private individuals many of whom have no connection to the school management.
