UNILAG kicks medical students out of hostels, shuts college over ASUU strike

Medical students at the University of Lagos have been kicked out of their hostels and asked to vacate the premises of the College of Medicine at Idi-Araba, latest on Monday (today).

The management of the institution gave the directive on Friday in compliance to the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The union had warned that there will be consequences for universities that didn’t suspend academic activities in support of the strike.

To avoid being in contradiction with the union, the university finally sent out notice to all student to leave the hostel as the school will be closed indefinitely.

The notice read in part: “this is to inform all the students of the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, that the Management has directed that the hostel accommodation exercise should be suspended until further notice.”

“In light of the above, it has also directed that the Medical students’ hostel be closed and students should vacate their hostels latest by Monday, 4th February, 2019 in view of the ongoing ASUU strike.”

ASUU has been on strike since November last year and has not come to any resolution with the government over outstanding debts. The union president, Biodun Ogunyemi said unless the government agrees to their demands, the strike will continue indefinitely.
