UN seeks legalisation of marijuana in Nigeria, says it’s a miracle drug

If the United Nations has its way, marijuana would be legalised as soon as possible in Nigeria.

The UN has urged the Nigerian government to relax its stringent laws against marijuana. Marijuana is a medicinal drug, it has said.

Project Officer of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Nigeria, Harsheth Kaur Virk affirmed that UN has approved the consumption of marijuana, also known as cannabis, for medical purposes.

Virk said the drug is a miracle drug allowed for medical reasons by the global body.

She recommended that the laws restricting the use of marijuana should be relaxed so that it can be prescribed to Nigerians.

Virk made the call during a public hearing at the senate on Monday.

“Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, has its stringent laws against it; but international conventions of the UN have approved it for medical purposes, based on the outcome of researches conducted to that effect by globally recognised institutes,” the UN official said.

“The Drugs and Crime Office of the UN sees addictive drug users as people who are sick, in need of treatment, care and rehabilitation.”

She, however, maintained that the UN is against drug trafficking and advised the security agencies to be proactive in their anti-drug trafficking campaign.
