Ukrainian fan thanks Mikel Obi in emotional letter, says Chelsea player is “symbol” of Nigeria
As John Mikel Obi’s illustrious Chelsea FC career gracefully comes to an end, there has been no shortage of respect and admiration from fans around the world for the Jos-born midfielder.
That was clearly evident as a fan, all the way from Ukraine, penned a letter to the Nigeria Super Eagles captain and midfield marshal, stating how the player had earned his love.
“You are one of the biggest symbols of Nigeria and one of the greatest players of Chelsea Football Club,” the fan, Nazar’s letter read in part.
Nazar shared that Mikel had inspired him to develop unwavering love for the Nigeria national team.
He also thanked the player for his professionalism in discharging his duties at Chelsea.
“From the first day you came to Chelsea you make me feel a big love to you. Your style of play, your interviews, your attitude to fans was fantastic and still is. You have done for this club even more than you can pretend, you made many fans to fall in love with Chelsea and Nigeria national team, even if this people (sic) from other countries,” he wrote.

Mikel, 29, joined Chelsea from Norwegian football team, Lyn in 2006. At the time, Mikel’s transfer had caused huge controversy, after Manchester United initially laid claim to the player’s signature.
He has won multiple silverware – including a prestigious Champions League winner’s medal – with the London club.
His next destination to ply his trade is yet to be confirmed, but a move to Spanish club, Valencia is highly favoured.
