Professor Dapo Akande has now been nominated by the United Kingdom for a judgeship at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the 2026 elections.

The UK’s Ambassador to The Netherlands and representative to the ICJ, Joanna Roper made the declaration and confirmed that Akande will be officially nominated in 2026, emphasizing the UK’s dedication to advancing international justice and the rule of law through its judicial appointments.

Professor Akande, originally from Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria earned his Bachelor of Law (LLB) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He has amassed over 25 years of experience in international law.

His career includes significant roles in various international legal forums. Akande has served as counsel in cases before the ICJ, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the World Trade Organisation, the International Criminal Court, and the European Court of Human Rights.
