Two women beaten 6 strokes for engaging in lesbianism in Malaysia

On Monday, at the Sharia High Court of North-Eastern State Terengganu in Malaysia, some women received six strokes of the cane for engaging in lesbianism.

The victims were beaten, behind closed doors and in front of about 150 witnesses, after the judge gave his verdict.

The women were also fined 3,300 ringgit ($806).

The punishment was supposed to take place on August 28, but was postponed to Monday due to technical reasons.

Wan Wan-Sidek, the Chief Registrar of the court, defended the caning by saying that, ”The power of the court has been enacted in the Terngganu state constitution and Sharia law allows women to be punished. They are just being educated and not tortured.”

One of the Justice for Sisters, Thilaga Sulathireh said she feared for the safety, privacy, harassment, humiliation and trauma of the women.
