Two risk five-year jail term for allegedly stealing empty beer bottles

Two men risk getting five-year jail term respectively for their alleged involvement in an empty beer bottles theft worth N4.9m.

The drivers, Dauda Aliu, 52, and Obinna Obiefuna, 40, were arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on Monday on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen goods.

Though the drivers both pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, they could each be sentenced to five years in prison if found guilty.

Aliu and Obiefuna, along with some other accomplices who are now at large, allegedly ran off with a full loaded trailer of empty bottles belonging to one Ugo Maduako.

The prosecutor, Inspector Uche Simon, told the court that Maduako got the men arrested after he found out that Aliu, who was supposed to offload a truckload of bottles at the company’s warehouse instead delivered it to his accomplice, Obiefuna, who in turn accepted them knowing fully well they were stolen.

Both suspects were granted bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum and the next trial set for Jan. 23, 2017.
