Turai Yar’Adua: Man, 70, “unlawfully detained for stealing former first lady’s food, money”

Yusuf Jikwando and his two sons are reportedly in trouble for allegedly stealing from former first lady Turai Yar’Adua.

Jikwando, according to reports, is the longest serving domestic staff of the Yar’Adua family. But that didn’t save him from arrest after foodstuff and some money reportedly went missing in the presidential household days before the Eid-el Kabir holiday.

Turia Yar’Adua reportedly handed the 70-year-old over to police in Katsina who refuse to release him on bail.

New Telegraph reported five heavily armed police officers ransacked Jikwando’s house in search of the missing food and money. The man’s eldest son and second to the last born were also arrested.

According to the report:

“While Jikwando’s family members and relatives tried to go and see the former first lady in Abuja over the arrests, five people, among them the man’s wife, had an accident near Kankara village. The victims sustained serious injuries.”

The report paraphrased a source saying Jikwando, despite serving the Yar’Adua family for over 40 years, lived in poverty and struggled to feed his family.

The man reportedly “celebrated” the Islamic holiday in Katsina prison. State police spokesperson Salisu Agaisa has denied knowledge of the reported arrest.

But Jikwando’s family reportedly called on President Muhammdu Buhari and human rights bodies in Katsina State to save the old man from Turia’s “clutches”.

The report says the police are neither interested in charging the 70-year-old to court nor in granting him bail.
