TRAGIC! Night watchman owing government loans hangs himself in Ekiti Secretariat
Workers at the Ekiti State Secretariat, Ado Ekiti, were greeted with the horror sight of a civil servant dangling from the building early Wednesday morning.
The dangling body was identified as that of a night guard at the Ekiti State Scholarship Board, Abolarinwa Olaoye.
The 49-year-old father of five used a piece of clothing to hang himself on the railing of a building at the Ministry of Education.
Olaoye had on Tuesday reportedly lamented bitterly to a colleague that he had serious financial problems. He had been augmenting his salary with a commercial motorcycle operation as well as farming.
“He came to me around 4.30pm on Tuesday and started lamenting that his house rent was due and that he could not pay due to irregular salary payment,” the deceased’s sister-in-law, Elizabeth Babalola, is quoted as saying.
Of his many problems, Olaoye also revealed he was owing the government after collecting loans to fund a house and car.
“He also complained about his inability to meet other financial commitments to his wife’s family,” Babalola added.
“He told me he could go ahead and do something nasty. He told me clearly that he was tired of life. I tried to persuade him not to resort to anything nasty. I told him life is full of ups and downs and that he should just endure, but I never knew he would end this way.”
