Tragedy struck in Lagos where four children of the same father were killed in after a mudslide “invaded” their house causing the building to partially collapse.

The unfortunate incident happened after heavy rains in Ojodu area of the state around 6:00 a.m on Saturday.

The children were recovered dead, and bagged.

An eight-year-old boy is among the four others who died in the tragedy. All the deceased belonged to the same father and his two wives.

Two of the women sustained minor injuries and were so treated. One of them had to be rushed to hospital, emergency officials said.

“The cause of the collapse was the heavy rainfall,” coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Nigeria’s southwest Ibrahim Farinloye said.

“Mudslides from the cleavage of a hill beside River Ogun hit the three bedroom flat, unfortunately the room where the deceased were recovered was the one hit by the mudslides.

“Another mudslide fell on one single room building in the area but no one was trapped there,” Farinloye said.

It was a sad day. This woman could not contain her sorrow.

NEMA later released a statement, pictures and identities of the family members affected by the tragedy.

“A mudslide from a hill at Orisha, Isheri-Magodo, Ojodu slipped from the hill into a three bedroom bungalow building causing partial collapse of building trapping four children of same father,” the statement reads.

The building was submerged in mud which resulted in its partial collapse.

“The children were recovered dead,” NEMA said.

NEMA identified the deceased as Sylva Odiah, 23; Sayo Odiah, 15; Clinton Odiah, 11; and Endurance Odiah, the eight-year-old.

Rescue agencies tried to save the day. They didn’t quite succeed.

They belonged to Mr. Odiah and his two wives. Three of the children belonged to one of the bereaved women.

“One of the mothers sustained minor injury and was rushed to Yaba General Hospital for treatment,” NEMA said.

“The eldest wife, Felicia Odiah had minor bruises and was given First Aid treatment.”

Some could only look on in sheer horror.
Others joined in the rescue effort but it was too late. They tried.
