Tinubu Offers Condolences to Niger State After Deadly Tanker Explosion
A catastrophic explosion at Dikko Junction, located in the Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, has resulted in the tragic deaths of over 80 people and left many others injured. The explosion, which occurred on Saturday, is believed to have been triggered by individuals attempting to scoop fuel from an overturned tanker, a practice that tragically led to the massive blast.
President Bola Tinubu expressed his profound sorrow over the incident, offering heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the government of Niger State. In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu emphasized the preventable nature of the tragedy. “The loss of so many lives is deeply painful, especially as the incident could have been avoided,” the statement read.
Tinubu extended his sympathies to the bereaved and assured the people of Niger State that the federal government would provide comprehensive medical care for the injured. He also directed relevant security and road safety agencies to take immediate action to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The President’s statement further stressed the importance of public safety, urging citizens to refrain from approaching accident sites, particularly those involving fuel-laden vehicles, due to their highly explosive nature. “It is crucial that we all exercise caution to protect ourselves and others from such devastating incidents,” he said.
In addition to immediate response measures, President Tinubu has instructed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers. The initiative will focus on educating the public about the severe risks posed by this dangerous practice, which has claimed countless lives over the years.
