”There’s a strong possibility that ‘ll be leaving PDP”- Sowunmi
Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says there is a “robust possibility” he could leave the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sowunmi, who previously served as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, made the declaration during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time, citing the ongoing crisis within the PDP.
“There is a very strong possibility that looking at what’s going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and their desires and my people, there’s a very, very strong possibility that I will more than likely leave,” he said.
His statement followed a visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Sunday, which stirred speculation about his potential defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Asked if he could support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, Sowunmi responded, “If I am going to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I’ll leave and join his party.”
He added, “If I’m not there, I’m not there. If I’m here, I’m here. I’ve been in PDP for 28 years. Most of them don’t even have that record of 28 days.”
Sowunmi also expressed frustration over the PDP’s refusal to heed calls for internal reforms. “Why would anybody who has a sense in his head say that he’s going to stay in a party where you’re even telling them to repair the party? I’ve done that. I’ve screamed and shouted that we need to reform this party,” he said.
On Channels TV’s Politics Today, he explained that his meeting with Tinubu was to engage the president directly. “It is not a bad time to have a conversation with the president. I decided to engage with him since people often discuss his frailty. So, I jumped on that investigation,” Sowunmi stated.
