Acting, scripting, dancing, singing, storytelling…the list is endless! Is it enough though to just have talents when you can make some cool cash from it while protecting your rights and personal interests? Did you know that to be street smart in the country today, you need to know how to manage piracy risk, harness your talent and your business sense?

Well, if you were at the first MTN Foundation-MUSON Music Scholars Programme workshop you would have left with a lot of answers.

At the workshop held on January 25th, 2019 at the Agip Recital Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos, beneficiaries and alumni of the MTN scholarship program as well as senior members of the MTN Foundation and the MUSON board came together to discuss their love for music, entertainment, but most importantly, how to translate this passion into financial benefits using the right processes so that there is no future case of “you stole my song” or “that’s my script” like …(*wink yes, those persons you are thinking of now).

From 2face Idibia to P-Square, TY Bello to Wole Soyinka, the list of successful Nigerians who have been able to turn their talents into money-making empires were case studies used by members of MTN’s commercial legal team to illustrate the importance of copyrights and intellectual property protection for the aspiring musicians, songwriters and composers in attendance.

This is probably why the MTN Foundation’s Executive Secretary, Nonny Ugboma called the workshop, “the Business of the Arts series”. She told the attendees present that the lessons shared were critical for success in contemporary entertainment, adding that, “we thought it was important to organise a series of lectures to benefit and prepare you for the real world.”

The MTN Foundation continues to build on its long partnership with MUSON, sponsoring many graduates of its School of Music as well as supporting a number of stage productions and events, including the MUSON Donors’ Appreciation Concert and the recently concluded Legends the Musical stage play.
