The Feud Between Kano’s Gov, Ganduje And Emir Sanusi Inches Towards Anarchy

Four Emirs are now battling for relevance and supremacy in Kano following their controversial installation by the governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The four additional first-class Emirs were created in what was seen as a move to whittle down the powers of the paramount Emir, Mohammed Sanusi II after a fallout between him and the governor.

Sanusi II courted the in-affection when he openly criticized Ganduje’s policies and actions and even opposed his re-election by supporting the governor’s opponent, Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the PDP.

At this point, Ganduje was already embroiled in a corruption scandal after a viral video showed him allegedly collecting a $5 million bribe from a contractor. With his integrity suffering a setback, the Emir’s confrontation nearly cost him his governorship position.

But after Ganduje was re-elected, he signed a piece of legislation that created four more emirates and reduced the emirate under Sanusi II from 44 Local Governments to only 10.

The action which was opposed by many at the beginning has successfully created factions in the previously united emirate, and some royal custodians and district heads are being sacked out of suspicion and accusations of disloyalty in the new dispensation.

Although Sanusi II challenged the move in a court, the case has not yielded the intended result.
