Tariffs Will Not End Drugs, Migration Problems, Mexico Warns Trump
Mexico insists that the import tariffs proposed by President-elect Donald Trump will have no effect on illegal migration into the U.S. or drug trafficking.
Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated this on Tuesday.
Trump, on Monday, announced that, upon assuming office, he would impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican and Canadian imports into America.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump has said via his Truth page.
Sheinbaum has now pointed out that threats will not make the U.S. problem of illegal migration disappear.
She called for dialogue with Trump and told newsmen of a letter she intends sending to the President-elect on the matter.
“President Trump, it is not with threats or tariffs that the migration phenomenon will be stopped, nor the consumption of drugs in the United States,” she read partly from the letter.
According to her, “cooperation and mutual understanding” is the best option for both nations rather than a tariff war.
“Why put a tax on them that puts them at risk? It is not acceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in the United States and Mexico,” the president stated.
Presently, there is a 30-year free trade agreement, now called the USMCA, which binds the United States, Mexico and Canada.

China is not left out as Trump has announced that the Asian nation will now pay a 10 % tariff on its imports into America.
