Suspected Lakurawa terrorists raid security checkpoints in Niger state
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists on Sunday attacked security checkpoints along the Mokwa–New Bussa road in Zugurma, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the attackers struck at about 4:30 p.m. after blocking the highway before launching assaults on security installations in the area, including a checkpoint operated by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
Sources said the gunmen overpowered officers at the immigration checkpoint and carted away an AK-47 rifled belonging to one of the personnel.
The assailants also reportedly attacked a police outpost in Zugurma Village.
However, police authorities confirmed that officers stationed at the outpost escaped unharmed during the incident.
Security sources further disclosed that no cases of kidnapping or abduction were recorded during the attack.
Authorities said the situation has since been brought under control, while security operatives have intensified efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible.
The police also assured residents that patrols and other security operations in the affected area would be strengthened to prevent further attacks.
