9 world-class sporting actions you can’t afford to miss on SuperSport 1 this week

With the current shortage in live sporting activities, SuperSport has converted its channels to themed content focusing on the best historical moments –  offering viewers the chance to ‘ReLive’ some of the greatest sporting actions of all time – as well as fascinating documentaries and a film festival featuring the greatest sports movies of all time.

SuperSport 1 is the feature channel in regard to all three of these aspects and DStv subscribers should settle in for some amazing viewing on the channel from 29 to 31 May 2020.

Friday 29 May’s ‘ReLive’ offering is headlined by the 2006 FIFA World Cup final between Italy and France (10:00 AM). This epic clash at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin went the full 120 minutes and was eventually decided on penalties – with the ‘Azzurri’ claiming their first title since 1982.

The match is also famous for Zinedine Zidane’s shocking end to his career, as he was red-carded for a vicious head-butt on Italy defender Marco Materazzi. “If you look at the 14 red cards I had in my career, 12 of them were a result of provocation. This isn’t justification, this isn’t an excuse, but my passion, temper and blood made me react,” said ‘Zizou’, who remained a beloved icon in French football despite his dismissal possibly costing his team the World Cup.

The top documentary programming for Friday is Parts 3 and 4 of ‘Take Us Home’ (06:00 and 06:45 respectively), the Leeds United docuseries which charts their roller coaster ride in the 2018-19 season under manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Friday’s sports film is ‘D3: The Mighty Ducks’ (07:30), the third and final installment of the Mighty Ducks franchise. This time around the Ducks team receives scholarships to the prestigious Eden Hall Academy and soon face off against the school’s arrogant varsity team with the help of their coach, Gordon Bombay.

Saturday 30 May’s ‘ReLive’ offerings are headlined by ‘Grandstand’ (02:00), where hosts Neil Andrews and Carol Tshabalala will be in studio spending three hours catching up on sport with some fantastic guests as we begin to look forward to the return of our favourite sportsmen and women.

The top documentary programming for Saturday is Parts 5 and 6 of ‘Take Us Home’ (09:10 and 09:55 respectively), which concludes the thrilling story of Leeds United’s failed attempt to secure promotion back to the top flight of English football, the Premier League, at the end of the 2018-19 season.

SuperSport 1 viewers can also enjoy the sports film ‘The Damned United’ (07:30). This 2009 Tom Hooper-directed drama stars Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall in a biopic which charts legendary football manager Brian Clough’s ill-fated tenure with Leeds United in 1974.

“Better than your average football pic, ‘The Damned United’ is carried by another star turn from Michael Sheen as Brian Clough,” wrote film review website Rotten Tomatoes, while critic Roger Ebert praised Sheen for portraying “modern British icons so uncannily that he’s all but disappeared into them”.

Sunday 31 May’s top ‘ReLive’ feature is Manchester United’s incredible turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s UEFA Champions League (01:00), which was decided by a nerves-of-steel penalty from Red Devils striker Marcus Rashford deep in injury time.

“I think keep a cool head they’re the kind of things I practice every day and I wanted to take it,” Rashford said of the spot-kick. “We got the goal and we’re progressing. The wait before is probably the hardest thing, but it’s all part of the game, and those moments are what we live for you want to get through those moments and be smiling after.”

The top documentary for the day is ‘Andre the Giant’ (10:45), a WWE film which covers the life and death of French professional wrestler and actor Andre Rene Roussimoff (better known as Andre the Giant) and his battle against gigantism.

Sunday’s movie entry is ‘Hands of Stone’ (07:30). This 2016 biographical sports film follows the career of Panamanian former professional boxer Roberto Durán, charting his rise to the top of the sport – including his two epic bouts with fellow legend Sugar Ray Leonard.
