South Africa legalises marijuana use

Celebrations broke out in South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday as the private use of marijuana was decriminalised.

The court affirmed a provincial high court’s discovery that its laws against the use of cannabis did not align with the country’s constitution.

Judge Raymond Zondo, much to the excitement of marijuana advocates and members of South Africa’s Rastafarian community who packed the court, said “It will not be a criminal offence for an adult person to use or be in possession of cannabis in private space.”

Zondo did not say how much cannabis one may have at home for private use.

The use of cannabis, in any form, remains illegal in Nigeria.

The Nigerian law prescribes a jail term of not less than four years for anyone who knowingly has any Indian hemp in his possession, while anyone caught trying to export the banned drug is liable to a 21-year jail term.
