Serial rape of minors, domestic violence reaches alarming rate in Delta

The Domestic violence and Sexual Offences unit of Delta state Ministry of Justice has raised an alarm over the high rate of rape of minors and domestic violence in the state.

Mrs Uche Akamagwuna, the Director of the ministry made this known at a school awareness initiative which aims to subvert the trend.

Speaking on the issue, she disclosed that the ministry is currently prosecuting over 300 cases of defilement and rape of minors, and more than 50 cases of domestic violence in courts across the state. She also added that there are five cases of incest on trial as well.

Akamagwuna said that the state government has zero tolerance for molestation and all forms of sexual violence.

She further stated that the Child Rights Law which has been domesticated in the state ensures the protection of every child and offenders might receive life imprisonment for rape and defilement.

Young people were warned to shun cultism, indecent dressing, substance abuse, and watching obscene videos that promote improper sexual activities.
