Senate wants INEC to announce June 12, 1993 election result

The Senate has demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  announce June 12,1993 election results.

The demand was made on Thursday during plenary at the upper chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, a day after President Muhammadu Buhari declared that June 12 will henceforth replace May 29 as official Democracy Day in honor of late MKO Abiola.

Buhari had said June 12 was more symbolic than May 29 as a day to celebrate the country’s democracy.

He also conferred a posthumous GCFR title on the late business man, a title only attached to presidents.

The Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu told the lawmakers that the constitution needs to be amended if June 12 is to be declared Democracy Day.

Senate president Bukola Saraki, on his part, said the nation has yet to give MKO and his family the recognition they deserve, stressing that the move by Buhari has been long overdue.

Saraki suggested that necessary entitlements should be paid to Abiola’s family as President, as well as his running mate, Professor Baba Gana Kingibe.

The lawmakers noted that while June 12 would be a public holiday, May 29 will remain the day for the inauguration of president-elects.
