Thuggery seems to be the new cool in Lagos as “area boys” rejuvenate their “give us our share” mentality.

It’s hard to build or install a new thing in some parts of Lagos without thugs demanding for their cut. In some areas in the state, residents are even “taxed” anytime they buy something new – be it a phone, TV, furniture, you name it.

The area boys almost always have their way…”almost,” except on occasions when they thug at the wrong lion’s tail.

That was the case at the Iwaya area of Lagos state on Sunday when hoodlums attempted to collect their “settlement” from technical officials who were trying to install a new power generator for a telecoms mast said to be owned by Globacom.

“Some technical officers came to install a power generator here and were confronted by the area boys who demanded an undisclosed amount of money,” a resident of Pedro Street who witnessed the incident told Newsroom.

“This had happened a while back and resulted in a serious fight between the technicians and the boys.”

“The technicians were prepared this time around. They came in the company of four heavily armed security men.”

“This did not deter the hoodlums from demanding for money. The armed men were pissed!”

“You need to see how the thugs numbering over 20 took to their heels after the armed men threatened to shoot.”

Some of them were reported to have run into a building opposite the mast site from where they scaled a fence into a secondary school in the area.

Others scampered for safety in nearby buildings while some others ran into the ghetto section that borders the street.

“After the thugs ran away, the security men called for police reinforcement and there was no trouble till the technicians were through with the installation,” another resident said.

“The thugs have threatened to return, burn down the place and beat up the woman who works at the mast site.”
