SAD: Police shoot another young man dead at Lagos hotel
Another person has reportedly fallen victim to a policeman’s itchy fingers at the Sobo, Akowonjo area of Lagos on Thursday (today).
The victim, a young man identified simply as Niyi, was allegedly shot twice in the chest by an unnamed officer at Erico Bellisima Hotels in the area.
Eyewitness reports say Niyi, 23, had gone to the hotel to challenge his debtor who, however, had police guards to protect him at the hotel.
The face-off reportedly led to Niyi being shot by the mobile policeman.
Niyi was said to have only returned from South Africa last week.
The incident led to a riot by an angry mob at the hotel.
The Lagos State Police Spokesman, ASP Famous Cole, confirmed the incident and said the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had ordered the arrest of the policemen involved.
Cole said the police officers were facing orderly room trial at the command headquarters, Ikeja.
He, however, said the shooting was accidental as the policemen were only trying to settle the melee.
“The policemen were trying to calm them down and there was an accidental discharge,” he told newsmen.
Recently, a policeman shot a woman dead at Onipanu area of Lagos, while purportedly aiming fire at a “yahoo” boy. The officer has yet to be identified.
