Ruto Nominates Kindiki as Deputy Following Gachagua’s Impeachment

Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as his new deputy, following the historic impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. This moment marks a pivotal development, as Gachagua becomes the first deputy president to be impeached under Kenya’s revised 2010 constitution.

The Senate voted late Thursday, with 53 out of 66 senators finding Gachagua guilty on five of the eleven charges presented by the National Assembly. These charges included serious allegations of corruption, insubordination, and engaging in ethnically divisive politics.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi officially announced the verdict, confirming that Gachagua would no longer hold office. With this decision, President Ruto’s nomination of Kindiki as his successor paves the way for new leadership and a potential redefinition of the administration’s priorities.

Kindiki, a 52-year-old academic and political figure, was among the frontrunners for the position following widespread media speculation. Ruto quickly moved to solidify his administration by asking parliamentarians to expedite the vote on Kindiki’s appointment.

The impeachment saga captivated the nation, known for its stability in a turbulent region. Gachagua faced five out of eleven charges, including accusations of threatening judges and engaging in ethnically divisive politics. Notably, he was absent during the proceedings, having been rushed to a Nairobi hospital for chest pains, which disrupted the Senate session.

While the Senate pushed through the impeachment despite Gachagua’s absence and the protests of his legal team, the National Assembly had already voted overwhelmingly in favor of the impeachment on October 8.

Kenyan media outlets covered the unfolding drama extensively, with The Standard boldly declaring “Fired” alongside an image of Gachagua. The Nation’s website referred to the events as “the night of long knives that sealed Gachagua’s fate.”

Gachagua, who played a crucial role in Ruto’s narrow victory in the 2022 elections by mobilizing support from the influential Mount Kenya region, has claimed that the impeachment process could not have occurred without Ruto’s approval. Over recent weeks, he had publicly expressed concerns about being sidelined by the president, while also facing allegations of supporting youth-led anti-government protests earlier this year.

Despite being cleared of corruption and money-laundering charges, Gachagua’s political future now hangs in the balance as he considers challenging the impeachment in court. While he has denied all charges, the political fallout from this unprecedented move will likely reshape Kenya’s governance landscape in the weeks to come.
