Russia’s nuclear protection chief, Kirillov killed in Moscow bomb explosion
In the early hours on Tuesday, a bomb blast detonated remotely was said to have occurred outside an apartment on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow, killing a senior Russian General Lieutenant, Igor Kirillov.
The bomb blast comes as Russia is still embroilled in a heated war with Ukraine.
Kirillov until his death commanded Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops.
An official statement from Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that the bomb was concealed inside a scooter outside the building where he was targeted.
Pictures circulating on Russian social media channels depict a shattered building entrance, debris around the scene and two lifeless bodies.
The two corpses include that of Kirillov and his assistant.
Reports emanating from Ukraine’s SBU security service claim Kirillov was “a legitimate target” and had been charged in absentia following alleged war crimes.
According to a source in Ukraine’s SBU, Kirillov was “responsible for the mass use of banned chemical weapons“.
Following the ugly incident, the Russian police has swarmed the area and established a perimeter at the scene.
