You no longer have to be afraid of Nigerian kidnappers. What should give you goose bumps is the possibility, should you be abducted, of screaming the wrong name.
Imagine being taken by kidnappers who are fans of Spanish football club Barcelona, and you’re screaming the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Not that you would know which club they support, anyway. But what if they took your ear-piercing scream for “mercy!” as “Messi!”?
“Messi! Messi! Messi!” was what the man who was kidnapped last week in Niger State cried as his abductors bundled him along.
Santiago Lopez Menendez, 28, said he screamed that sporting name not to plea for mercy but to identify himself as Argentinian.
The agricultural engineer was really fortunate. What if those kidnappers were Madrid fans?
When they got the clue he was from Argentina, the same country world famous Messi hails from, they kept calm… and probably chose to trade the foreigner for some bucks.
Menendez has been freed and will reunite with his family soon.
We still are not sure why he was not traveling with his security details the day he was taken.
What we do know is that the name of Messi can work wonders…if your abductors are Barca fans.
What will Ronaldo think about this? Now, that’s an El Clasico query..
