House of Rep Mourns Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, Hailing Him as a “Gallant Officer”
The House of Representatives has expressed sorrow over the sudden death of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who passed away late Tuesday at 56.
The House extended its sympathies to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Nigerians at large, describing the loss as monumental.
In a statement seen by Newsroom and signed by Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was described by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, as “a gallant military officer,” one who leaves behind a legacy of commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and tackling security challenges head-on.
“His dogged spirit and determination made Nigeria safer,” Tajudeen remarked.
Speaker Tajudeen further reflected on the late general’s contributions to national defense.
“He represented the spirit of dedication and valor that the Nigerian Army stands for,” he noted, adding that “Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s input showcased his dedication to addressing the challenges facing the Army.”

According to the statement by the House, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s military career was marked by notable achievements, holding crucial roles before his appointment as Chief of Army Staff in June 2023. His tenure included strategic positions such as Director of Operations at Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and General Officer Commanding various divisions, all of which exemplified his leadership and commitment.
The late Chief of Army Staff also served in peacekeeping with the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2004 to 2005.
Expressing the House’s condolences, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., House Spokesman, said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with all who mourn during this difficult time. May his remarkable life and service bring comfort and strength to all who mourn his loss.”
