“Here are the reasons Jacob Zuma’s statue will not be pulled down” – Okorocha

Following the resignation of Jacob Zuma from office, many Nigerians who are still peeved about the former South African president’s statue still standing tall in Imo State want Governor Rochas Okorocha to pull it down.

Zuma is among seven statues erected by the Imo State government in Owerri.

Zuma’s tenure since assuming office in 2009 was plagued with allegations of corruption. He resigned Wednesday after his own African National Congress party told him it was time to go.

Governor Okorocha has, however, stated that Zuma’s statue will not be pulled down.

A press release signed by Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeudo on Friday, gave the following reasons why the statue will remain standing:

Jacob Zuma’s statue continues to stand tall in Imo State.

1. The statue was erected when Zuma was in office:

Okorocha stated that the statue was erected when Zuma was the president of South Africa.

2. Zuma has no formal education:

The second reason why Okorocha said the statue will remain standing is because Zuma did not receive any formal education but rose to play a major role in the freedom of South Africans.

3. He resigned honorably:

The release partly read, “He also resigned honorably. And after his coming to Imo where he spoke against the killings of Nigerians in South Africa, the situation came under control to a large extent.”

4. Zuma came to Imo to partner with the Rochas Foundation:

Zuma “came to Imo to partner with the Rochas Foundation College for Africa. He didn’t come for politics. And even after his departure as president, he would still go ahead to make his contributions to the education of the less privileged children in Africa.”
