Qatar 2022: Here’s what inspired the Al Bayt retractable stadium
On 30 November 2021, ahead of Qatar’s first FIFA Arab Cup match fixture against Bahrain, Al Bayt Stadium became the latest stadium to be officially inaugurated for the tournament. This is one of eight venues that will host games during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will begin on November 20, 2022.
Apart from the group stages, the stadium in Al Khor city will host one match each in the round of 16, quarterfinal, and semifinal. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 but will be reduced to 32,000 seats after the 2022 World Cup.
Here are four facts you need to know about Al Bayt Stadium in advance of the 2022 FIFA World Cup;
The Al-Bayt Stadium Contemporary Design
Other than being extremely eye-catching, the design of the stadium is extremely practical as the shade of the tent-like structure is retractable which compliments the cooling technology inside the stadium. The design of Al-Bayt stadium was inspired by the traditional Arabian gazebos in which the people of Qatar in the Gulf region used to live in years gone by. It is a design that reflects both the past and present of Qatar. The idea is to serve the fans with a comfortable temperature inside the facility without using any extra power.
The stadium is a benchmark of legacy and sustainability
The Al Bayt Stadium has received a Class A* rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for its design and construction process. The Stadium has been designed incorporating the best energy usage practices and green building materials which have been a key feature of Qatar’s efforts to host the most environmentally friendly World Cup ever.
Al Bayt Stadium Capacity
The Al Bayt Stadium capacity is made of 60.000 seats for fans and other more than 1,000 for the press. In addition, it counts more than 400 buses and 1,000 taxis to help people to get there and enjoy the experience. Another pro is that the capacity of Al Bayt allows for connecting the entrance with the Doha subway line, which facilitates access and mass mobilization.
The Construction Team’s Efforts
A number of companies played a key role in delivering Al Bayt. Qatari contractor Galfar Al Misnad, in collaboration with Italian companies Salini Impregilo Group and Cimolai, oversaw the construction of the stadium and energy center. Landscaping and underground utility works were carried out by Qatari contractors Bin Omran Trading and Contracting and Al Sulaiteen Agricultural & Industrial Complex. KEO International Consultants served as the construction supervisors, Dar Al-Handasah delivered the design, while Projects was responsible for project management in the initial phase.
