‘We welcome Trump’s attitude’ -Putin
President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has said the European nation welcomes the attitude of the newly inaugurated President of the United States Donald Trump, following his inauguration.
Putin expressed his thoughts on developments in the U.S. during Russia’s Security Council meeting held on Monday.
He hoped that Moscow and Washington would begin talks on important matters of mutual interest and global matters.
He noted that the Russia-Ukraine war and nuclear arms control were critical matters to be discussed.
Putin hailed Trump for eyeing world peace.
“We see the statements by the newly elected president of the United States and members of his team about the desire to restore direct contacts with Russia.
“We also hear his statement about the need to do everything possible to prevent World War Three. We, of course, welcome this attitude and congratulate the elected president of the United States of America on taking office,” Putin said.
Relations between both nations are currently at an all-time low, with the Kremlin hoping that the new U.S. government will herald a change.
There are, some, however, who remain pessimistic of this happening.
Putin, himself, eyes long-term solutions rather than temporary reprieve.
“The goal should not be a brief ceasefire, not some kind of period of respite that would allow a regrouping and rearmament of forces, but a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people and all peoples who live in the region,” Putin said.
