Protests erupt at EFCC headquarters as El-Rufai appears for questioning
Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, on Monday arrived at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja for questioning over alleged financial misconduct.
Supporters of the former governor gathered outside the anti-graft agency’s office in solidarity, while a separate group of protesters opposed to him was also present at the premises. Tensions escalated as security operatives dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas.
The EFCC is reportedly probing El-Rufai over allegations of mismanagement of public funds during his tenure as governor.
The development follows an incident last Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security operatives allegedly attempted to arrest the former governor upon his return from Cairo.
Subsequently, El-Rufai claimed that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had directed officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) to detain him at the airport.
