Police tortures 20-year-old guard to death for allegedly stealing in Ogun

A 20-year-old security guard working at Barka Nigeria Limited in Magboro has been reportedly tortured to death by operatives of the Zonal Inspection Squad, Obada in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

Jubril Mohammed who was accused with five other colleagues of stealing goods worth N7 million to N8 million from the company’s warehouse when their Lebanese boss traveled was confirmed dead by the unit commander of the police squad.

Although he had denied any knowledge of the missing items, his boss reportedly invited the police from Ibafo station who arrested Jubril and later released him on N30,000 bail. But when the case was transfered to ZIS Obada, he was eventually re-arrested by the operatives who beat him to death during interrogation.

On further disclosure, the victim’s cousin, Saheed Isa said that Jubril had confided in his family that he was being framed into collecting N300,000 from the culprits who threatened to kill him if he refused.

“He told us that he was afraid and he told other workers. He said he decided to agree with the gang to avoid being killed, but told the workers he confided in that when the gang brings trucks to steal the goods from the company, he would raise the alarm on them and shut the gate so that they would be arrested,” Isa said.

The plan didn’t work out because the suspects had already moved out the goods without his knowledge, hence his denial of not being aware of such incident.

The Zone 2 Police spokesperson, CSP Dolapo Badmos confirmed the incident and added that the incident is undergoing investigation.

However, Jubril’s father, Ibrahim said that he doesn’t want to stretch the issue any further, as he opposed the intention of the police to run an autopsy on the body.

“I asked the police to release his corpse to me, but they said they want to conduct an autopsy. I asked if that would make him wake up. I want to bury him. I don’t have anybody to fight for me,” he said.

The police insists that it will not have it any other way and the family of the deceased would only have to wait out the process.
