An officer of the law refused to intervene in a public disagreement that unfolded before his eyes and delayed vehicular traffic.

The unnamed police officer, eyewitnesses told NewsroomNG, is usually interested only in arresting motorcycle operators (okada men) and extorting money from them.

“In fact, he was arresting an okada man when a truck brushed a car at Adeshina bus stop this afternoon,” an eyewitness told us.

The bus stop is located along Bajulaiye Road in Shomolu-Bariga area of Lagos State. This episode played out at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

We gathered that the police man was unable to take the okada man away as the woman he was carrying was a senior police officer.

While this played out, heavy traffic built up as a truck driver and a car driver argued on who was to blame.

The truck appeared to have brushed the car and damaged one of its side mirrors. The truck driver said he wasn’t to blame as the car driver was “inexperienced.”

“The unnamed police officer at the scene approached both men but said nothing to them,” our eyewitness told us.

“He then simply turned back and walked into a tricycle which drove him away. There was still traffic as the truck and car blocked the road. Other drivers had to intervene to beg both men to move their vehicles off the road.

“I was afraid to take a picture of the police officer as he was carrying a gun,” the witness said.

Other residents of the area said the police do nothing but extort money from okada operators who break no law.

They said the police officer in question was the most “wicked” of those “extortioners.”

The episode lasted minutes. The road was blocked. The police officer walked away. Road users had to intervene to settle the wahala.
