Plateau government impose 48-hour curfew after gunmen kill dozens in Jos
Several people have been killed following an attack by gunmen in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Sunday at a popular bar, where residents were reportedly gathered when unidentified armed men opened fire sporadically. The attackers are suspected to be cultists.
At least 12 people have been confirmed dead, while many others sustained injuries of varying severity. The wounded have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
In response, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew across Jos North LGA. The restriction, according to a statement, takes effect from midnight on March 29 and will remain in force until April 1, 2026.
The Commissioner for Information, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, described the incident as a “tragic security situation” and condemned the violence.
The government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, denounced the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked,” assuring residents that security agencies are working to apprehend those responsible.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with ongoing investigations by providing useful information.
Meanwhile, troops under Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence. Security operatives have sealed off key access routes and directed residents to stay indoors as search operations continue to locate the perpetrators.
