Photos: Suspected robber allegedly names police accomplices to save self from angry Lagos mob
A suspected thief caught in Ikeja area of Lagos, Thursday, was reportedly naming his police accomplices when officers stormed the scene and whisked him away.
Austin Obi, Ikeja shop owners claimed, had been preying over businesses at Seriki Aro Avenue at night.
Obi is believed responsible for several night break-ins in the area. Reports say shop owners considered him a menace.
Traders reportedly caught him in the act, Thursday morning, and were about lynching him when he started pleading for mercy.
As slap after slap, blow after blow, punch after punch, landed on Obi’s battered boy; the alleged thief reportedly begged for mercy and offered to name his accomplices in return.
His hands tied, out of his bloodied mouth came the names of “prominent police officers” in the area, eyewitnesses say.
An eyewitness said the anger of the lynch-happy mob transformed into sheer disbelief as Obi allegedly mentioned names of police officers some in the crowd reportedly knew.
The roll call was ongoing when police officers came to the scene to stop the mob from lynching the suspect from whom three allegedly stolen laptops were reportedly recovered.
Newsroom contacted Lagos police over the allegations. We got no response as at press time.
The fate of Austin Obi remains a mystery.
